[Blog] The Art of Unlearning

Oct 23, 2023

By Sam Chand

Many of us strive for growth. This comes through pushing yourself, learning, and experience. But, many aren’t as intentional with the process of unlearning out-of-date and ineffective things. If we aren’t unlearning, we’re not adapting effectively. The only question is, how do we unlearn?

We can’t just start unlearning things. First, we need to identify what is out of date and no longer a useful or effective method, process, position, etc. The only way we can do this is if we take a step back and look at what’s working and what’s not working in our organization and our leadership. We have to look closely at what processes are no longer aiding our organization and its mission. Once we know what doesn’t work, then we can unlearn.

This shouldn’t be a mission you undergo alone. Get your team to sit down together and voice their experiences – they most likely have a unique insight into the processes and programs you’re discussing and can help you and your team come to a conclusion. Involve your team and make sure they are heard. This is key to an effective analysis and successfully unlearning the useless information your organization is still holding onto.

In conclusion, while it is paramount each of us pursues learning over each of our lifetimes, we also must be intentional to unlearn what is no longer necessary. Take time to analyze your systems, structures, and processes. Change what needs to be changed – eliminate what is no longer of use to your organization’s mission and goal. We must be deliberate to unlearn!

One way to unlearn is to receive outside help from a professional coach! Find out more about Dream Releaser Coaching and the benefits of coaching.
