Conflict serves a purpose. When there is conflict, we explore the issues surrounding that conflict more fully. The associated tension causes us to look deeper into a decision to make sure that we have all the information we need and we aren't overlooking anything.

In essence, conflict becomes the motivation to make sure we examine the situation in detail. No one wants to be on the wrong side of an issue he didn't fully investigate. When conflict is involved, people are often more committed to the final decision because they are confident that the issues have been examined from all sides and the best solution has been reached.

For conflict to be used positively it must involve dialogue with opposing parties before the decision is made. The actual process of making the decision becomes more important than the decision itself.

Even people with contrary views will respond positively, or at least "agree to disagree," if they feel like their side was heard and understood by those making the decision.
